PHOTOGRAPHER

When did you realize you were an artist?

I realized I was an artist in 2nd grade, when I first started writing short stories. I was also a dancer and an actress and although couldn’t put words to how I expressed myself. I knew deep down that I was a creator by nature. In college, I studied photography and writing and referred to myself as a “photographer” and “writer” but upon graduating, when I really found my voice and preferred medium of creating, I finally started identifying as an “artist.”

Do you have a particular story you’d love to share?

When I was in my early twenties, I was going through a very rough period of depression, anxiety and general unhappiness with the circumstances of my personal life. I wanted to escape myself, crawl out of my body and mind and let my soul rest somewhere else. Instead, I picked up my camera and started experimenting with new shooting techniques and a new aesthetic inspired by abstract, expressionist and impressionist paintings. I was attempting to capture the chaos within and I didn’t know how to do so in the ways that I was accustomed to working. One of the worst times of my life lead to a creative awakening. I developed a completely new style and felt connected to my work in a completely new way. I felt like I had found my artistic home and rediscovered my passion for art.

What was it that convinced you to join ARTDEX?

I thought that ARTDEX would be a great tool for exposure, connection and networking.

“I am motivated by so many different things but mainly, the desire to express the shadow self and the emotions that overwhelm me. I am a very visual person and see everything like a film playing before my eyes, every feeling, experience and fantasy vividly reveals itself to me and I feel an urgency to transcribe those images into tangible pieces of art.”
